Ancient botanicals, biotechnology and clinical research converge in Dr Teo Wan Lin’s vision for Dr.TWL Dermaceuticals and her belief that beauty’s next chapter belongs to Asia.

As the beauty world looks increasingly to Asia for what’s next, Dr Teo Wan Lin believes some of the most exciting answers can be found by looking back in time. The dermatologist, researcher and founder of <a href="https://drtwlderma.com/">Dr.TWL Dermaceuticals</a> brings centuries of Eastern botanical wisdom into conversation with modern biotechnology, shaping a distinctly Asian perspective on skincare and science. An idea and passion born from her dermatology practice in Singapore in 2016, the brand draws on years of <a href="https://twlskin.com/research-publications/">clinical research and a deep understanding of Asian skin</a>, particularly the unique demands of Southeast Asia’s hot, humid climate.

For Dr Teo, tradition and technology have never been opposites. From Hanbang-inspired ethnobotanicals and whole-plant science to the halal-certified GashaLab Capsule Facial®, she is taking <a href="https://twlskin.com/research-publications/">time-honoured knowledge</a> and giving it a thoroughly modern, clinical rethink.&nbsp;
At a moment when Asia is increasingly shaping the global conversation around beauty and innovation, L’OFFICIEL Malaysia welcomes Dr Teo as our latest digital cover star, where we spotlight how her vision for the future of skincare is proudly rooted in the wisdom, science and possibilities of the East.

For readers discovering Dr.TWL Dermaceuticals for the first time, what inspired you to create the brand, and what was the gap in skincare that you wanted to fill?
The core Founder’s Formula range was birthed out of my dermatology practice in Singapore back in 2016, as a complete skincare regimen that delivers visible results in as little as 7 days. Each formulation is adapted to the unique needs of Asian skin with years of clinical validation, designed to achieve skin resilience as an effective maintenance regimen. Gentle enough for reactive and sensitive skin, yet packed with a potency that rivals traditionally prescribed retinol and acid-based cosmeceuticals in the dermatologist’s office. Dermocosmetic R&amp;D is traditionally dominated by Western pharma giants, and is largely tailored for Caucasian skin types in temperate climates.&nbsp;
Asian skin, which falls under skin of colour, is especially prone to hyperpigmentation and sensitivity. Our formulation philosophy leans into a synergistic blend of Hanbang-inspired, rare Eastern ethnobotanicals, peptides and amino acids. Our IP portfolio also includes proprietary whole-plant science phytoextraction techniques that preserve micronutrients and antioxidants essential for skin healing and repair. For instance, our methionine actives are derived from broccoli sprouts, in contrast to the typical synthetic alternatives found in other brands.

What excites you most about bringing these different worlds of traditional eastern medicine and modern biotechnology together?
&nbsp;It’s the alchemy of seeming opposites that really drives me. It’s also about the thrill of discovery. As a scientist, I’m driven by protocols and logic, yet my work in Eastern ethnobotanicals has taught me that nature is full of surprises and in that sense I’ve learnt that it’s equally important to keep an open mind. Our latest range is testament to how clean science and cutting-edge biotech can co-exist: the same lens of duality through which I’ve come to view traditional Eastern medicine and modern pharmacology. It’s the synergy and the sense that two disparate worlds are converging in my research that motivates me in my journey of innovation.

Many people think of traditional remedies and cutting-edge science as opposites. Why do you believe they actually work best hand in hand? 
As chief scientific officer, I envision my role as a finessing of traditional Eastern medicine with modern pharmaceutical engineering. And it is through advanced testing that science now can measurably demonstrate the clinical efficacy of ancient herbal roots in real-time. I strongly believe that the more we advance in biotech, the closer we get to appreciating the wisdom of the ancients. There is a dearth of research in whole plant-based pharmacology, and my work focuses on <a href="https://twlskin.com/research-publications/">unraveling these intricacies in an era where clean science has become a priority</a>. For instance, our newly launched GashaLab Capsule Facial® is the first on the market to utilize advanced zebrafish embryo bioassay testing on ethnobotanical formulations for efficacy and toxicity testing of advanced dermocosmetics.. It’s classed by international regulatory bodies as an emerging NAM (New Approach Methodology) as a sustainable non-animal alternative to traditional eco-toxicity testing.
You've described your work as being rooted in Eastern wisdom while driven by clinical research. How do you decide which traditional ingredients are worth reimagining through modern science? 
Eastern pharmacopoeia is actually backed by entire troves of ancient medicas like the well-known Huangdi Neijing. Our Founder’s Formula and Capsule Facial ranges are anchored in Hanbang tradition, drawing from the heritage of Dongui Bogam, the 17th-century UNESCO-recognized text that codified Eastern herbal wisdom.

Your product range is designed specifically for Southeast Asia's hot and humid climate. What makes skin in this region so different, and why does it need its own approach to skincare?
It all boils down to how the environment impacts the skin microclimate. Tropical weather creates an occlusive effect on skin; that means it worsens pre-existing skin conditions like acne, and heat/sweating can also exacerbate eczema. There’s also the sensorial aspect of skincare that’s key in our weather: skincare must feel comfortable on skin.
Thick, rich formulas meant for temperate weather simply don’t cut it here. The entire product line is built on my research on how heat and humidity affect the skin microbiome, barrier function, as well as cell regeneration. With our clinical flash facial range, we incorporated ancient Eastern ethnobotanicals like Peonia Suffructicosa (Mudan Pi), Scutellaria Baicalensis (Huang Qin), Belamcanda and Hiba specifically for its ability to target heat stress, which we now know accelerates cell aging and worsens sensitive/reactive skin.

You also have a range of products that are halal-certified. Can you share more about them? 
That’s our latest GashaLab Capsule Facial® dermocosmetic system that aims to deliver the clinical efficacy of professional skin treatments without irritation from peels and lasers. Traditional, preservative-free and designed for maximum potency, zero downtime and total skin comfort in our tropical weather, it’s a leave-on flash facial that’s packaged in precision-dosed ampoules that work in under a minute.
As we are working with rare botanicals in their purest forms without additives, one of the challenges we faced was the seasonal availability of certain ingredients in the region, as well as limited production runs. This actually inspired me to come up with a solution — an omakase-style clinical flash facial series comprising a first collection of 5 ampoule sets, which we’ve just filed a patent for. At the heart of this is a retail customisation experience that prescribes viral Asian beauty trends like mochi skin, milk skin, glass skin and more.

Why was it important for you to create a collection that's both inclusive and tailored to the needs of consumers in this region? 
Our clinical research and testing over the last decade were primarily focused on Southeast Asian skin traits in our tropical environment, and the halal certification was an intuitive next step to better reflect the sensitivities of the region.
What are your go-to Top 5 holy grails from your product line you'd recommend to our readers discovering your brand? 
All our formulas are one-of-a-kind, lab-owned IP developed over a decade of stringent R&amp;D and testing on reactive and problem skin. I’m proudest of our Miel Honey Cleanser, which is the sole dermocosmetic cleanser on the market developed for its climate-adaptive properties that regulate total skin ecology. Based off medical-grade honey for its skin-healing properties, it’s infused with plant adaptogens like Blackberry lily root, as well as a botanical complex of arnica, gentian, yarrow and artemisia that calms reactive skin.
Next we have the Mineral Booster, our deep sea water mineral facial mist, which is boosted with 19 different plant, root and flower extracts for anti-inflammatory and healing properties. I never do without the Sensorial Amino Acid Masque for busy days—it’s a hydrating cleanse, potent Vitamin C infusion and a gentle peel all in one.&nbsp;
The last two would be from our latest capsule flash facial range, the Purple CodeTM formula is an ultra-low irritation peel designed for sensitive skin, and Vanda VeilTM is my current favourite ultra-hydrating weightless formula designed for total barrier repair and skin comfort in humid weather.&nbsp;

With K-beauty, J-beauty and now a growing focus on biotech innovation across Asia, do you think we're entering a new era of Asian beauty? 
Absolutely. To me, the future of beauty innovation is in Asia. We started in Korea a decade ago, and in the past year we’ve expanded to China. The best biotech infrastructure is arguably now concentrated in the Greater Bay Area; this was why we set up our manufacturing base in Guangdong, where the specialised technology can be replicated at scale for our proprietary ampoule tech.
That’s just from a functional engineering perspective. Asia has so much to offer in terms of heritage and culture. To me, the viral Asian beauty trends that have gone global are much more about aspiration than they are about skin science. The world has a lot to learn from Eastern botanical wisdom, not just from the annals of ancient texts, but also in terms of embracing the deep philosophy and sensorial aspects behind this phenomenon we’ve come to call Asian beauty.
If there's one thing you hope readers take away after discovering Dr.TWL Dermaceuticals, what would it be? 
Skincare isn’t complicated; it isn’t about trial and error, and it can indeed be a one-size-fits-all. The concept of universal tolerability is often overlooked, and the best skincare is gentle first, before it can be effective.That’s true skin science.
