Fashion photographer Mathieu Baumer replaces his professional camera with an iPhone 12 Pro to prove that the smartphone is worthy of fashion photography.

At the recent AMI show, fashion photographer Mathieu Baumer decided to leave his professional equipment at home and attended the runway show with just his iPhone 12 Pro at hand.

Proving that the latest smartphone from Apple is worthy of capturing fashion magazine-worthy photographs, Mathieu shares with us his experience and exclusive images from the runway and backstage.

What did you think of the AMI collection?

This new&nbsp;collection from Alexandre Mattiussi reminds me of a &quot;revival&quot; of the 90s. It is a very nice revision of the basics from the era.&nbsp;Minimalist monochrome looks, constructed silhouettes, oversized and very clean designs&nbsp;with beige, orange, blue, green... I loved the suits, the coats&nbsp;and the oversized looks with ultra wide shoulders. With a pair of sneakers, it&#39;s a snap!

The collection was also showcased on a catwalk inspired by this &#39;90s era. It was a perfect staging, produced by OBO GLOBAL, who had the very good idea to place photographic extras around the catwalk equipped with Flash cameras from those 90s: a very strong moment, photographically speaking. How was it interesting to use the iPhone as a photographer?

For its photo and video versatility: today, we talk a lot about the profession of &quot;image maker&quot;, the reunification of photographer and videographer, and it is a revolution, the new face of my profession.

The iPhone 12 Pro is the tool and&nbsp;key that allows me to express and implement this new photographic style&nbsp;Its large storage capacity of 512 GB and its 3 lenses&nbsp;give me plenty of&nbsp;creative possibilities.

As for its maneuverability, all movements and frames are possible and accessible under extreme conditions. There is no longer a productivity frontier, I barely forbid myself anything. There is also the possibility of augmented reality, with the LiDAR sensor. This technology places virtual objects in the real world. And with its new ProRaw mode, the iPhone12Pro also gives me the ability to generate RAW files, the digital negative.

Thanks to this, I have the functionality to refine my images with the most precision of what I want. I have settings for noise reduction, exposure, colour fineness, sharpness and white balance. And it all fits in my pocket!

What has this brought to your creative process as a fashion photographer?

On the AMI fashion show, there were several photo and video sets in addition to the catwalk and the backstage. There were lots of things to photograph, it was intense. You had to be everywhere.

The iPhone allows me to sneak in snapshots discreetly. The creative process does not change, the iPhone enhances it. Each photographer will have his vision and his interpretation through the iPhone. It lightens, brings technical simplification for shooting. There is no need for a camera stand, no more lens changes and&nbsp;no more bags with all the accessories.

The iPhone even pushes us to be more creative! You arrive, you &quot;shoot&quot;, you capture 100 times more stuff, it&#39;s incredible.

Any advice for our readers who would like to get into fashion photography?

Go ahead, try everything. Use different frames on your subject, horizontally, vertically, unframe the subject, move forward, backward, grab your subject, and your iPhone, don&#39;t standardize yourself!

Do not hesitate. Landscape, fashion, decoration, still life, nothing is forbidden, be creative. And take the time to observe, to photograph whatever you like.
