Does the brand&rsquo;s latest hair dryer live up to the hype?&nbsp;

When I received the invitation for an exclusive, top-secret virtual product briefing back in February &mdash; which turned out to be for the new Supersonic r&trade; &mdash; I RSVP-ed with high expectations. After all, the Dyson Airstrait, launched less than a year before that, has completely changed the game when it comes to drying and straightening my (rebonded) hair. So naturally, I was curious to see what Dyson had up its sleeve next.
But here&rsquo;s a little confession: compared to the groundbreaking features we&rsquo;ve seen from some of Dyson&rsquo;s other hair tools, I wasn&rsquo;t exactly blown away (pun intended) by the Supersonic r&trade; at first glance.
I know, I know &mdash; it&rsquo;s like comparing apples to oranges. If anything, the fair comparison should be with the original Supersonic. So, with the Supersonic r&trade; in hand, I was determined to give it a proper go. Touted as Dyson&rsquo;s &ldquo;most powerful, yet lightest and most precise hair dryer to date,&rdquo; it weighs at just 325g, making it 30% smaller and 20% lighter than the OG model. And that&rsquo;s something you&rsquo;ll notice the moment you pick it up.

Despite its compact size, the hair dryer packs some serious tech. At the heart of it all is the new streamlined heater &mdash; the Dyson HyperdymiumTM&nbsp; motor &mdash; which spins at up to 110,000rpm to deliver high-velocity airflow. As someone with ultra-thick hair who&rsquo;s been relying on salon-grade hair dryers for decades, I was genuinely impressed by its average 12-minute drying time &mdash; from soaking wet to dry. Thanks to the shorter nozzle and that ergonomic curved shape, I also found it really easy to manoeuver. Hello, salon-worthy blowout with half the effort.

Another noteworthy feature? The built-in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors in attachments. These communicate directly with the hair dryer, so you have to do is add on the attachment, and the Supersonic r&trade; will automatically adjust its motor speed and heater to deliver the optimal airflow and temperature &mdash; no extra guesswork required. Each unit comes with five attachments, designed to suit different needs and hair types: the powerful air attachment for fast, high-velocity drying, the pro concentrator for precise airflow control, the gentle air attachment that diffuses and softens the airflow, the smoothing nozzle to reduce frizz, and the flyaway attachment, which uses the Coanda effect to tuck away flyaways.

While I experimented with all five at the start, I quickly found myself gravitating&nbsp; towards just two after a few days: the powerful air attachment (for aforementioned 12-minute blow-dry) and the flyaway attachment for the final, polished touches. My husband &mdash; who has a much shorter hair and sensitive scalp &mdash; vouches for the gentle air attachment. (Yes, the Supersonic r&trade; has become a shared essential in our household).
So, the million-dollar question: should you invest in one?
After using it for two weeks, here&rsquo;s what I&rsquo;ve come to realise: not every beauty tool needs to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, what you really need is something reliable, high-performing and thoughtfully designed. And the Dyson Supersonic r&trade; delivers that &mdash; and more. Consider me converted.
